Microsoft bids $45 billon for Yahoo

Microsoft Corp offered to buy Yahoo Inc for $44.6 billion, in a bold bid to transform two ailing Internet businesses into a worthy competitor for market leader Google Inc.

In what would be the biggest Internet deal since the ill- fated Time Warner-AOL merger, Microsoft sent a letter to Yahoo's board on Thursday night to offer $31 per share in cash and stock.

Microsoft aims to break Google's dominance in the market for online search by proposing to buy out Yahoo.

But the success of a merger would depend on letting some of Yahoo's brands survive and even acknowledging that a few of its products are superior to Microsoft's, ad executives and experts said on Friday.

"They've got to resist their own impulses, which would be to roll the Microsoft product with the Yahoo product and bundle it all in Windows Mobile," said Daniel Taylor, senior analyst at research firm Yankee Group. "It might mean making some hard decisions about whether Yahoo's search product is better."

Microsoft says merging with Yahoo will allow it to offer a competitive alternative to Google in the market for online services.

Internet disrupted in India, Mid-East and Egypt

A breakdown in an international undersea cable network badly disrupted Internet links to India and Egypt on Wednesday.

India reported serious disruptions to its services and one Indian Internet service provider linked the problem to the Egyptian outage.

"There has been a cable cut on several cable systems in Alexandria, Egypt which has impacted internet connectivity in India," Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL), an internet service provider, said in a statement.

VSNL said its service had been "largely restored" by diverting to another cable.

India said it had lost more than half of its capacity.India suffered up to 60% disruption, a national industry body told Reuters news agency.

Internet services have been disrupted in parts of the Middle East following damage to an undersea cable in the Mediterranean, according to reports.

In Dubai, one of the two internet service providers (ISP) was completely down, reported AP.

Yahoo! Mash is a new social network service launched by Yahoo! sometime early September 2007 to compete with MySpace, Orkut and Facebook in offering mashups of existing web services on a single user interface.

Yahoo Mash features:

1. Mash has the unusual feature of letting a user edit other peoples pages, unless the user turns this feature off.

2. Since, Yahoo!Mash pages are made up of "Modules" which can be added by the user or their friends. One "Module" that can be added to your page (or friends page) can show photos from Yahoo!'s photo sharing site Flickr.

3. You can also use the private messaging system for communication between users.

4. Yahoo! have offered with it's MASH community the ability to edit someone else's profile, as well the profile-owner's ability to undo any changes made to the profile. Prevent Boss From Snooping On Your Google Search

There are chances that someone is secretly spying on your Google search tracks for various reasons. For example, the employer may monitor your Google search habits to know if you are looking for jobs elsewhere while the local ISP may be collecting your Google queries with the purpose of selling that data to large analytics companies.

You cannot prevent these people from watching you because Google appends the search queries to the URL without encryption. So when you type "Jobs New York" in the Google search box, it returns a search page with the URL google.com/search?q=jobs+new+york and that makes data collection fairly simple.

There’s however a workaround - just use Google with a mask that comes indirectly from Google itself.

The following 10 websites are all hosted on the same server as Google.com and they are exact replicas of the main Google website - you cannot find a single difference unless you look at your browser address bar.

And the URL names of these websites ("ABN Amro Bank Group", "I Love Your Robin", "United American Fund", etc) sound fairly ambiguous so your boss (or local ISP) will never feel that they you are doing a search on Google.com.

GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google Gmail account, allowing you to use Gmail as a storage medium.

GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google Gmail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your Gmail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to.

Ever since Google started to offer users a Gmail e-mail account, which includes storage space of 2000 megabytes, you have had plenty of storage space but not a lot to fill it up with. With GMail Drive you can easily copy files to your Gmail account and retrieve them again.
When you create a new file using GMail Drive, it generates an e-mail and posts it to your account. The e-mail appears in your normal Inbox folder, and the file is attached as an e-mail attachment. GMail Drive periodically checks your mail account (using the Gmail search function) to see if new files have arrived and to rebuild the directory structures. But basically GMail Drive acts as any other hard-drive installed on your computer.
You can copy files to and from the GMail Drive folder simply by using drag'n'drop like you're used to with the normal Explorer folders.

Because the Gmail files will clutter up your Inbox folder, you may wish to create a filter in Gmail to automatically move the files (prefixed with the GMAILFS letters in the subject) to your archived mail folder.

Please note that GMail Drive is still an experimental tool. There's still a number of limitations of the file-system (such as total filename size must be less than 65 characters). Since the tool hooks up with the free Gmail Service provided by Google, changes in the Gmail system may break the tool's ability to function. I cannot guarantee that files stored in this manner will be accessible in the future.

Three of last year's fastest-growing tech companies are back at the top in 2007. Google (GOOG), AT&T (T), and Apple (AAPL) took the highest spots in a list that ranks companies by a combination of share performance, sales and profit growth, and return on equity, a measure of the company's ability to generate profit on behalf of its shareholders. Performance is measured in the 12 months through Nov. 15, 2007.

Google does a better job than rivals such as Yahoo (YHOO) in wringing profits from online advertising, while AT&T is reaping the benefits from a flurry of acquisitions, including the 2006 purchase of BellSouth. Apple keeps on tapping demand for its iPod digital music player and in June introduced a music-playing cell phone called the iPhone.

Ophcrack is a Windows password cracker based on rainbow tables. It is a very efficient implementation of rainbow tables done by the inventors of the method. It comes with a GTK+ Graphical User Interface and runs on Windows, Mac OS X (Intel CPU) as well as on Linux.

The ophcrack LiveCD contains a small linux system (SLAX6), ophcrack for linux and rainbow tables for alphanumerical passwords.

The liveCD cracks passwords automatically, no installation necessary, no admin password necessary (as long as you can boot from CD).

This is a utility to (re)set the password of any user that has a valid (local) account on your NT system. Zoho Writer is a full-featured word processor which supports real-time collaboration between multiple users. The major difference is that while one can debate the merits of online/offline for individual productivity applications, project management by definition is team-work and as such a natural fit for the Web. Zoho Projects is free for one project, and has a scaled price structure above.

Zoho CRM offers Customer relationship management functionality. However, it also goes beyond with procurement, inventory, some accounting functions which are more in the realm of ERP than simply CRM. Zoho CRM is free for up to 3 users, and costs $12 a month for each additional user.

Zoho Creator is an online database / custom application development tool which allows users to create fairly sophisticated process logic without knowing how to code, simply by dragging & dropping script elements on screen. Users can import data from .xls, .csv, and .tsv files and create a variety of forms either from scratch or by using one of several common templates.

Users may include text, images, video, and audio in a "notebook," and then share the notebook or individual pages with their friends. Zoho Notebook even allows integration of documents, full-fledged applications, and content via RSS. Internet censorship in India

Recently, i came across an article on wikipedia about Internet censorship in India. It was an interesting reading. After doing little study on it, here are main point for you...

The Government of India some years back established the Computer Emergency Response Team, or CERT-IN, as a means to monitor all incoming and outgoing Internet traffic from India. The primary purpose of CERT-IN is to handle Internet security and many institutions and agencies are allowed to call on it, including the home affairs ministry, courts, the intelligence services, the police and the head of the National Human Rights Commission.

In 2001, the Bombay High Court appointed a Committee to oversee issues relating to cyber pornography and Cybercrime.

Instances of censorship in India:

In the wake of the Kargil War in 1999, the website of Dawn Newspaper was blocked from access within India by Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited. , a government-owned telecommunications company which at the time had monopoly control of the international Internet gateways in India.
The first documented incident of Internet censorship in India was the Yahoo groups ban of 23rd September 2003. Kynhun, a Yahoo group linked to the outlawed "Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council,", a minor separatist group from the North-Eastern state of Meghalaya, which espoused the case of the Khasi tribe was banned.
The second reported incident of Internet censorship is the Indian Government's censorship of 17 websites including some blogs starting July 1, 2006.
The leading Indian website rediff has dropped bulletin boards on all news items relating to the Glasgow attacks and other stories related with terrorism . This order is supposed to be a self censorship based on guidelines from the government .

Internet telephony services in India without a proper license:
Companies such as Skype, Yahoo, MSN, Net2Phone and Google are facing government scrutiny on payment of service tax through the provision of illegal Internet telephony services.

ISPAI (ISP Association of India) had alleged that an ISP license or a unified access services license (UASL) is required to provide Internet telephony, which these firms do not possess. This means that the alleged offenders neither pay service tax (as there is no billing for such calls in India), or the 6% AGR or even the 0.75% of AGR to be paid as ADC. ISPAI had also pointed out that these companies were also violating the security norms governing telecom licenses.

Mr. Kusumba S from vebtel.com an IP telephony company based in Hyderabad, India says:

"ISPs donot have any objection for the FREE pc to pc services provided by those companies mentioned above. However, ISPs DO have objection for their paid PC to Phone services in India as ISPs take license from DoT and pay Revenue share @ 6% to DoT for providing Internet Telephony Services.

Hence, the services provided by above not only are competing with the licenses services in India, but are also National Security threat to India, since, the above mentioned service used encrypted voice transmissions that are beyond the scope of Indian licensing terms."

Mr. AMIT Singh from Times Groups ( one of the largest media services in India ) says:

"Google, skype, Yahoo, MSN, Vonage, Dialpad, Net2phone,Peoplecall and so many illegal gray providers are violating the LAW, destroying the competitive land-scape and posing a serious risk to national security. The criminal, terrorist or underworld guys can to make calls and to threaten anyone may be using this illegal providers and Indian govt can’t do anything as there is no LOG report available in India as the servers who are providing these services are out of there reach some where internationally.
Also As the legit ITSP of India are required to pay 12.36% service tax and 6% revenue share to Dot where as these firm sitting outside India get escape of all this and provide services in India from a grey route. Innocent customers just because of saving there few amount of money come in there loop and also become a victim of equal crime which is leading to lose for national revenue and high amount of threat to national security."

MSN and Yahoo, however, denies such claims. IAMAI, the association supporting Yahoo, MSN and others, says,

".....that since these companies offer free service there is no question of levying a service tax through licencing."

How to access Gmail when it is blocked at work or school

Many people asked me if there was a quick way to get around the firewall that keeps them from being able to access his Gmail at work.

Gmail is Google's free webmail service. It comes with built-in Google search technology and over 2,600 megabytes of storage (and growing every day). You can keep all your important messages, files and pictures forever, use search to quickly and easily find anything you're looking for, and make sense of it all with a new way of viewing messages as part of conversations.

Here some way you can access gmail behind firewall.

Google Official Blog Deleted March 27 2006

Back in April 2004, Google launched their blog at googleblog.blogspot.com. But somehow, in the past few hours, that blog has been completely deleted from the Blogger servers, and users are instead seeing a "Not Found. The requested URL was not found on this server. Please visit the Blogger homepage or the Blogger Knowledge Base for further assistance."

When tempted with a vacant blogspot URL with a PR9, one blogger did what many are probably very envious of... register the googleblog.blogspot.com blog URL.

Now, those who have the official Google Blog on their RSS feeds, saw an entry pop up a few minutes ago with:

Google, fix your blog pleeasssee! <3>(P.S. Just to clear things up, I'm not associated with Google at all. I just wanted to take advantage of this before someone else with less worthy intentions did. The username was giving a 404, so I tried registering a new blog with it. Surprisingly, it worked. Oh, and no posting URLs in the comments or else they'll be deleted.)

And, of course, the comments have been left open (although they appear to have been closed now). It doesn't show up on the main googleblog.blogspot.com URL, but it can be accessed through this link.

It has to make you wonder how this blog could have possibly been deleted. It doesn't appear to be a simple glitch in the system, since other blogs (including other official Google blogs) appear to be intact. So what could have been the reason behind it? Disgruntled employee who has access to the blog? Overzealous blog spam filter automatically deleting blogs? Someone who hacked the blog and removed it?

Whatever the reason, I am sure that the blog will be restored to its former glory shortly, and it sounds as though the blogger who registered it is more than happy to hand it over to the Google blog team. But an interesting turn of events nonetheless, and we will probably hear more about it from Google once it is restored.

It took a couple of hours, but the Google Blog is back up and running with all the original entries, and the "Google, fix your blog pleeasssee" entry is now gone.

The Google Blog was unavailable for a short time tonight. We quickly learned from our initial investigation that there was no systemwide vulnerability for Blogger. We'll let you know more about what did happen once we finish looking into it.

Update: We've determined the cause of tonight's outage. The blog was mistakenly deleted by us (d'oh!) which allowed the blog address to be temporarily claimed by another user. This was not a hack, and nobody guessed our password. Our bad.

Lesson: Accept your mistake, find out where the things are wrong...& do your BEST again....& again...
